Axiom College are celebrating the announcement of two of their graduates, who were both selected as state finalists for the prestigious Queensland Training Awards for 2010 held in September. Already in its 49th year, these awards encourage and recognise the hard work and amazing efforts individuals are making to society.

North Queensland's Amber Muller was selected for the 'Bob Marshall Trainee of the Year', while finalist Ryan Jones was in the 'School Based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year' category. They had been nominated from a pool of nearly 6000 candidates around Queensland.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the finalists showcased Queensland's best vocational education and training achievements and help communities reap the success from skilled workers.

"The calibre of these finalists is a testament to the State's employers, apprentices, trainees, vocational students and training providers and their drive to innovate and excel," Mr Wilson said.

Axiom College continues to grow its service in both quality and in delivery, said trainers Ian Lester and Kristy Sanderson, with such awards reinforcing the college's 16 year reputation in the training industry.

"I am thrilled by the recognition this provides our students, and the opportunities made available to them through this award", Mr Lester said. "Specialised training, with an individual approach ensures our students graduate with confidence".

A Great Experience

This month, Guilaine Senn, Pauline Hogan, Cass McMullen-Burn and Rod Ward have been hard at work honing their warehousing skills. They are about halfway through their Certificate III in Transport & Distribution (Warehousing and Storage).

The training is building the skills and knowledge to coordinate goods for distribution to customers, to use inventory systems and apply product knowledge to organise receivables and dispatches. The workplace-based course is enabling Guilaine, Polly, Cass and Rod to contribute skills at line level and will qualify them to undertake additional study in the field. It is developing a multitude of skills including picking and processing orders, receiving goods, completing dispatch and goods received documentation, using inventory systems, securing cargo, operating specialised load shifting equipment, monitoring storage facilities and operating a forklift. Guilaine, Cairns Business Unit Office Administrator, is really pleased to learn something different. "It's been a great way of multiskilling. Having more people obtaining a forklift licence will be beneficial for the company," she said. Polly, Cairns' Logistics Assistant, is pleased. "After all these years of having the knowledge and skills to finally have a recognised certification is great." Cass, the Business Unit's Purchasing Officer and Storeman, echoed those feelings: "After many years working with DMS it is nice to gain the certification." Rod, DMS' Engineering Technical Officer in Cairns, summed it up for everyone. "It's been a great experience," he said.

Bernice Higgins' outlined recent survey results by the NCVER regarding traineeships in her presentation to the Inner West Chamber of Commerce membership. Bernice's presentation "Train, Retain and see your business grow" outlined the benefits of traineeships offered by AXiOM College, along with the results of interviews with employers (small, medium and large) who currently have trainees. The results revealed that Small business, and Qld business rated training by private providers high than other providers, while 85% of small companies are satisfied or very satisfied with traineeships meeting their skill needs.

One of Queensland's most exciting registered training organisations; AXiOM College, the National Australia Bank and ICET have joined forces to give 10 young people the opportunity of a lifetime.

For the first time ever in Queensland, the National Australia Bank's Community Trainee Programme will enable these young adults to gain paid work experience in a bank branch and receive a "Certificate III in Financial Services" through Axiom College's training. This training will enable them to pursue a bank or other financial institution career. National Australia Bank's Region Manager John Rossberg said "I am very excited about this new initiative and being able to give our recent school leavers a career opportunity."

The ICET Group, a notforprofit community based organisation, manages Apprenticeship and Traineeship programs on behalf of Industry Host Employers. A strict selection criteria followed by oneonone interviews provided ICET with a shortlist of potential trainees who were then passed onto National Australia Bank area managers for further selection. Ten excited trainees (all aged between 1819 years) were chosen from a large number of applicants, and will now be placed in NAB branches throughout southeast Queensland for the duration of the project - twelve months. Axiom College Financial Services Trainer Heather Smith said "It's a wonderful chance for the students to gain an insight into the world of banking, and for Axiom College to be involved in such an innovative and worthwhile project".

On Monday 28 June, one of Queensland's most innovative registered training organisations, Axiom College, will be involved in a new and exciting training program. Fifteen students from ESS Indigenous Training Employment Program (ITEP) will commence a fiveweek Hospitality Training Course at Axiom College's Townsville campus. ESS Support Services Worldwide (ESS) is a division of Compass Group, the Worlds largest Foodservice Provider.

The ITEP students are of Indigenous background and before being accepted into the program had to undergo a series of interviews and meet basic entry level selection criteria. These included being 18 yrs or older and holding a current driver's license. The aim of the ESS Indigenous Training Employment Program, which is supported by the Dept of Employment & Work Place Relations (DEWR) - Corporate Leaders for Employment Program, is to equip students with entry level skills aimed at future employment opportunities within the ESS Queensland Remote support service operation.

Axiom College will provide training in 8 hospitality modules (Certificate II level), some of which will be theorybased and conducted in our training rooms. The practical components of the training will be delivered at the Townsville Golf Club, who through their community spirit, have offered their facilities to the program. Here, students will have handson practical training sessions in a realworld environment. On completion of successful training, ESS will assist in placing the 15 students in employment in remote sites throughout northern Queensland.
